CALL FOR PROPOSALS (Funded by the European Commision)
The ongoing outbreaks of H5N1 Avian influenza in Indonesia have had a significant impact. Since August 2003, more than 10 million livestock have been affected and the H5N1 virus has crossed the species barrier resulting in at least 135 confirmed human cases with 110 deaths. Moreover, the potential exists for the H5N1 Avian influenza virus to trigger a human pandemic.
Research on clinical disease, virology and epidemiology of H5N1 In Indonesia is needed to understand the ecology and variability in transmission to human. To foster essential research, WHO requests for proposals that will then be evaluated through a review process. The awards will then be made to competent researchers and institutions focused on research of local scientist and public health professionals. Areas for research include:
1. Studies of disease ecology, transmission and epidemiology.
2. Studies of clinical spectrum and management of disease.
Detailed information of call for proposal includes : application and assessment process assessment criteria and deadline or proposal submission, is attached and available at WHO Indonesia Country Office Website.Who are specifically invited to send research proposals?

Once, a cap seller was passing through a jungle. He was dead tired and needed to rest. Then, he stopped and spread a cloth under a tree. He placed his bag full of caps near him and lay down with his cap on his head.
The cap seller had a sound sleep for one hour. When he got up, the first thing he did was to look into his bag. He was started when he found all his caps were not there. He was wondering where they could have gone. Indeed, he was greatly puzzled.
When he looked up the sky, he was very surprised to see monkeys sitting on the branches of a tree, each wearing a cap on his head. They had evidently done it to imitate him.
He decided to get his caps back by making a humble request to the monkeys. In return, the monkeys only made faces of him. When he began to make gestures, even when he raised his first towards them to threaten them, they also imitated him. At last he hit upon a clever idea. “Monkeys are a great imitator,” he thought, So he took off his own cap and threw it down on the ground. As he had expected, all the monkeys took off the caps and threw them down on the ground. Quickly he stood up and collected the caps, put them back into his bag and went away. Why was each monkey wearing a cap on their head ?

An aurora is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic regions, caused by the collisions of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermospehere). The charged particles originated in the magnetosphere and solar wind are directed by the Earth’s magnetic field into the atmosphere. Most aurora occup in a band known as the auroral zone which is typicality 3° to 6° in latitudinal extent and at all local times or longitudes.
Aurora is classified as diffuse or discrete aurora. The diffuse aurora is a featureless glow in the sky which may not be visible to the naked eye even in a dark night and defines the extent of the auroral zone. Discrete aurora are sharply defined features within the diffuse aurora which vary in brightness from just barely visible to the naked eye to bright enough to read a newspaper at night. Discrete aurorae are usually observed only in the night sky because they are not as bright as the sunlit sky.
In northern latitudes, the effect is known as the aurora borealis (or the northern lights), named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas, by Pierre Gassendi in 1621. Its southern counterpart, the aurora australialis (or the southern light), has almost identical features to the aurora borealis and changes simultaneously with the changes in the northern auroral zone and is visible from high southern latitudes in Antartica, South America and Austraia. The following are some facts about aurora, EXCEPT …

Nowadays, many people have realized that agriculture is much more important than other supporting tools in economic development. in Indonesia agriculture should be the priority of development because of some good reasons.
First of all, the agriculture’s contribution in the beginning of the development of the country was the highest of all sectors. At present, almost half of the total Indonesian labors are working in the agriculture sector, but the contribution of the agriculture sector does not reach 30 percents.
Second, the agriculture sector is expected to fulfill the need of food in the country. As the number of population increases in an alarming rate each year, food supply must also increase but the agricultural production per capita never increases more than one percent each year, and in some extreme cases, it is even stagnant.
Last but not least, without agricultural development, the growth of the industrial sector will be hampered because the growth that comes from industry will bring a wider gap into theb internal economy in that country. In turn, this gap will create serious poverty problems, wider inequality of income distribution, and increase unemployment.
It is, therefore, obvious that the government should put agriculture as the priority of national development. What is the percentage of the contribution of the agriculture sector to the Indonesian economic development ?

Study groups are commonly utilized by many student to prepare themselves for class discussions, examinations, or class presentation. They can also make use of it to review their weak points and learn new ideas. I myself find that we can learn more effectively in a study group. However, I can’t deny that study group have also some disadvantages.
On the positive side a study groups gives the students motivation to study and update their readings because other members likely give them encouragement. It also helps them to learn new ideas as well as important points they missed on their readings so I could also share something.
On the other hand, the disadvantage of a study group is the part of compelling the student to attend it after class or during their free time. Commitment among each member is also an important aspect in a study group. Hence, the members of a study group to set aside other activities to study together.
To Join a study group or not is the student’s own choice, because there are other students who learn better when they do it on their own. If student thinks he/she will be learning effectively in group, he/she had better go on and enjoy the fun way of learning. Some students are motivated to study in a study group because the other members likely …

A natural disaster is a terrible accident, e.g. a great flood, a big fire or an earthquake. It usually causes great suffering and loss of a large sum of money. The casualties are injured or died. Some people are homeless and need medical care.
Floods occur when the water of rivers, lakes, or streams overflow their banks and pour out into the surrounding land. Floods are caused by many different things. Often heavy rainstorms that last for a brief time can cause a flood. But not all heavy storms are followed by flooding. If the surrounding land is flat and can absorb the water, no flooding will occur. If, however, the land is hard and rocky, heavy rain cannot be absorbed. Where the banks are low, a river may overflow and flood adjacent to lowland.
In many parts of the world floods are caused by tropical storms called hurricanes or typhoons. They bring destructive wind of high speed, torrents of rain, and flooding. When a flood occurs, the destruction to the surrounding land can be severe. Whole villages and towns are sometimes swept away by water pouring swiftly over the land. Railroad tracks and buckles are uprooted from their beds. Highways are washed away.
When a building caught fire, the firemen pitched in to help battle the blaze. Before the pumps were invented, people formed bucket brigades to fight fires. Standing side by side, they formed a human chain from the fire to nearby well or river. They passed buckets of water from hand to hand to be poured on the flames.
The damage of fire did depend a great deal on where it happened. In the country or a small village, only a single house might burn down. But in crowded cities, fire often destroyed whole locks and neighborhoods before being controlled. What can possibly prevent rivers and lakes from overflowing ?

A descendant of an empu who was one of Prince Diponegoro’s troops, Adisucipto was predicted to have a short life. Mbah Wiryo, Adisucipto’s grandfather, said that his grandson was like Palgunadi, a courageous and honest wayang character who dies young. That was why Adisucipto father insisted that his son go to School tot Opleidings van Indische Arisen (STOVIA), a medical school for Indonesian during the Dutch Colonial period, and become a doctor.
